During my several day assessment trip to the delta in one of the
villages of Pyin Alan, called Ah Mat Gyi, I met Da Shwe. She is a 78
year-old Karin women whose name means "gold".
Da Shwe's daughter and grandchild.
All of them climbed up on the roof (without a ladder)-this 78 year old
women, her daughter, her 5 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter-see
pictures-and spent the night holding on for dear life at the very top
of the roof as the waters continued to rise and the winds blew bringing
down nearby homes and trees. In the morning their roof was still intact
and the waters began to recede as the tides changed. They feel
fortunate to have come through this alive.
Da Shwe, 78.
On the night of the storm she was with her daughter and her
grandchildren. Initially they went to a neighbor's house which appeared
more secure; however soon they realized the waters of the nearby river
were rising higher than they ever had before. They had to leave their
neighbor's home and headed to higher ground on the roof of their house.
Church roof.
A church opposite Da Shwe's house was destroyed during the night. Only the roof remained intact.
