Bangladesh: Relief for Cyclone Victims

Dorcas, through local partner organization Koinonia, will support 2,500 families (12,500 persons) with food this month.

The families are victims of the recent cyclone AILA (which means Dolphin) that hit the south-western coast of Bangladesh in the afternoon of May 25, 2009.

The powerful cyclone tore across parts of coastal Bangladesh and eastern India,
triggering tidal surges and flooding that killed at least 275 people and left millions marooned by floodwater or forced to take refuge in shelters.

Dorcas and Koinonia will give the assistance in the districts of Barguna, Sathkira and Khulna.
Rice crops and seed beds have been inundated by stagnant saline water, brought by surge in the cyclone affected districts. Seasonal crops and vegetables also went under water.

Aila ripped through many areas still recovering from Cyclone Sidr in November 2007, killing 3,500 people in Bangladesh and left at least
a million homeless.
