Then: Financially Sponsored - Now: Self Reliant
He's 20 years old. His name is Temesgen and he comes from Addis in Ethiopia. Today, he earns his own money as a taxi-driver, an occupation that always fascinated him. He provides for himself and his family, earning 1500 Ethiopian birr (about € 97) per month.
But - Temesgen has not always had food on the table, he has known difficult times and hunger: When Temesgen was six years old, he lost his father. His mother was very poor and could not take proper care of Temesgen and his siblings. The family struggled. One day, Temesgen was accepted into the Dorcas Sponsor a Child programme and life changed. It was 1995 and through the financial support of a donor in the Netherlands, Temesgen received support for this body in the form of food and healthcare as well as social and spiritual support for his mind and soul. Temesgen's grades at school began to improve considerably. The situation at home also became better.
- "For me, Dorcas is not only an organization. It's also God's way of achieving His goal for his children" says Temesgen.
The impact of the project touched the whole family. Temesgen took the national exam in grade 10 and joined a vocational training programme. He was interested in driving a car - and so, he got his driving license which enabled him to start working as a taxi driver.
Temesgen is a happy man. Though he has reached his dream, it does not end here. His plan is now to buy his own taxi and support at least one poor child somewhere in the world through the Dorcas financial adoption programme "Sponsor a Child". He has already began saving.
