Baby Dorcas Born in New Maternity Clinic!
October 11, baby Dorcas Manuel was born in the new maternity clinic in Mozambique. The doors of the clinic in Beira was officially opened with representatives from the national Ministry of Health, staff from Dorcas' local partner organisation CCM, mothers-to-be, parents with their children and Dorcas staff present. Only a few days after the festive occasion, the first baby, named Dorcas Manuel, was born. Both he and his mother Teresa Moises, 18, are doing well.
The new clinic is part of a project reaching the 15,000 people in the Inhamudina suburb, one of the largest slums of Mozambique's second city Beira, that lack access to primary health care. It specifically targets malnourished children and pregnant women. The top-priority of the clinic is reducing infant and maternal mortality, malnutrition among children and increasing access to quality health care. Both pre- and postnatal care is provided to pregnant women at the clinic. Also midwives are trained and immunization services are provided to women.
Dorcas has supported local partner-organisation CCM with its health program since 1996. Wonderful results have been achieved - and continue to be achieved! - such as the reduction of malaria cases and diarrhoea in 2009, both part of the top five causes of child mortality in the third world.
