Dorcas Staff Visit Iraq Relief Project
- "The security situation is still alerting in many towns in Iraq as elections are coming up soon" said Peter, one of the two Dorcas staff members who just returned from a project-visit to Iraq where Dorcas is implementing a relief-project for IDPs (Internally Displaced People).
- "Many of the IDPs, who fled their homes because of religious and/or ethnic violence, are still afraid to go out on the streets. Security measures are severe. Even getting to work in one of the villages close by, is dangerous for many. The situation is not easier than it was a year ago. There are still families fleeing from their homes due to direct threats, kidnapping and daily harassments because of their religious and/or ethnical background. Many have fled to cities and villages (mostly to the North) where they do not speak the local language and therefore are facing very scarce job opportunities. Many of those who are able to find a job, are paying more than 75% of their salaries to cover the rent. Only the more fortunate ones, who had some cash when they fled their homes, are able to survive."
With winter around the corner, there is a great need for blankets and heaters to keep the families warm at night, especially since many of them sleep on the floor. Dorcas is currently planning to arrange blankets and heaters to those in need.
Answer to a Prayer
A spot of light was the meeting with an Iraqi lady, who had been praying to God asking for help for the poor families whom she had been visiting for encouragement. Today, she thanks God for the help rendered by Dorcas. Some 900 families are currently receiving food from Dorcas every month to meet their nutritional needs. Now, her prayer is that the help will continue as many still live in great difficulties.
