Today: World AIDS Day 2009!
Worldwide, a staggering 33 million people are infected with HIV/AIDS. This is why Dorcas Aid continues to fight the disease through projects in Russia, Albania, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania:
Russia: Thousands of youngsters are reached with HIV/AIDS education and awareness. In 2008, Dorcas assisted at least 50.000 teenagers with education on HIV/AIDS.
Albania: Every year, Dorcas supports hundreds of Gypsy and Roma women with education regarding HIV/AIDS and on how to prevent infection. In 2009, close to 1,000 women were reached.
Ethiopia: Dorcas supports more than 200 AIDS orphans with educational opportunities and basic necessities such as food and hygiene materials and psychological support.
Lesotho: Every year, Dorcas supports people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) to find a job and generate own income. This is done through e g setting up a small business or growing a kitchen garden. In 2008, 132 of kitchen gardens were established.
Kenya: HIV positive people often suffer from stigma in Kenya. Dorcas assists these people to reintegrate into their families, schools and communities. This is done through awareness campaigns, providing free HIV/AIDS testing and counseling of families with an HIV-positive family member.
South Africa: People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) such as bedridden patients, are assisted with medication, nursing, counseling, domestic care, food parcels and cooked meals. In 2008, 314 PLWA received basic nursing care at home.
These are only a few examples of HIV/Aids related activities that Dorcas Aid International is supporting. We are incredibly thankful for the achieved results, yet the need remains great. Join us in fighting AIDS.
Together we can make a difference!
