9.3 Million Meals Distributed in 2009
In 2009, Dorcas through and with its local partner organisations distributed a record number of meals, totalling 9.389.952 worldwide.
Hungry and food insecure school-children in Turkana, Kenya and in North Korea received meals. Needy and poor families in Zimbabwe, Lesotho and South Africa also received food. With subsidy from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dorcas assisted IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) in Iraq.
Poor elderly in Georgia and South Sudan received meals, as did many disabled and sick living on the street in Ethiopia. Short-term food-distributions were implemented in Tanzania and Bangladesh to victims of droughts and floods.
The majority of the meals were distributed in Kenya in response to a drought. Dorcas Aid Kenya together with Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Narok, local partners of DAI, the Anglican Church of Kenya, Pwani Christian Community Services, Mt. Kenya Christian Community Services and Mt. Kenya East Christian Community Services formed a consortium and assisted more than 10,000 households from April to August.
The meals were spread through the so-called Anti Hunger Corps, a special fund that provides financial support in response to requests for immediate food aid. DAI raises funds for the Anti Hunger Corps through DFOs (Dorcas Funding Organisations) and institutional donors.
