World Food Day
Today is World Food Day. According to recent UN-data, around 868 million people globally are suffering from malnutrition. Meaning one in eight people worldwide. Each year at least 2,5 million children die as a consequence.
When it comes to hunger, positive change has been achieved, mainly in Asia. However, the malnutrition number is still growing in Africa.
What does Dorcas do to beat hunger?
Relief and Anti-Hunger Corps
In some cases, hunger is a result of disasters. In these cases, Docas provides food packages and other basic materials such as tents and blankets. The Anti-Hunger Corps takes action in situations without an official relief campaign or in countries that need support for a longer period of time. Among others, Dorcas provides food to elderly people in South Sudan, to homeless people in Addis Ababa and to victims of the war in Syria. In 2012 the Anti-Hunger Corps provided almost 600.000 meals.
Dorcas Food Campaign
In Eastern Europe, especially elderly and impaired people and single parent families find it hard to make ends meet, especially the harsh conditions during the winter. Most families have money to buy either food or firewood, but rarely for both. For them, Dorcas organises the Dorcas Food Campaign. Thousands of volunteers buy food for food packages in churches and supermarkets. The collected food packages support and encourage the poorest of the poor in Eastern Europe.
Development
To defeat extreme hunger, Dorcas aims to sustainably improve the living conditions of the poor by providing agricultural skills to encourage self-reliance. For example by agricultural improvements and training for farmers or by building dams.
