KENYA in Crisis
An Outburst of Violence
On December 27, 2007 Kenya conducted an election and the results
were disputed by the opposition resulting in bringing about post
election violence. So far about 300 people have lost lives and over
250,000 people have been displaced from their homes. The most affected
regions are Rift Valley, Western, Nyanza and Nairobi provinces. With
the formation of vigilante groups, the flow of food and other
essentials to and from these areas has been disrupted. It is estimated
that over 30 million bags of maize and wheat will go to waste in Rift
Valley province alone. Most of the displaced people are currently
camped in police stations, church compounds and selected school
compounds.

Dorcas Aid International Kenya is giving emergency assistance to more than a 1,000
of these families: a blanket and rations of sifted maize flour, cooking
oil and beans. Having lost their belongings - and many also their
shelter - these families are camping in a park now. There are also
those who are not displaced but are in dire need of food since their
livelihoods have been disrupted since the violence began in December. |
