Mongolia: Tackling Food Insecurity
The impact of the climbing food prices is making itself felt throughout East Asia, thus also in Mongolia. The bread prices have had a dramatic impact on the lives of ordinary Mongolians, who have also complained that while the price has risen, their weight of bread has decreased. In some cases, food prices have nearly tripled in the country.
As a response to the situation, Dorcas, together with JCS, assisted close to 2,000 persons (380 families) in the months of February and March through food-distribution including meat, flour, rice and oil.
The poor people assisted in the project area live in Bayankhongor Aimag, located in the south west of Mongolia in the Gobi desert.
Shurentsetseg and her husband Hishigbat are both unemployed and have two sons. In March, they had nothing to eat until they received food assistance.

Olziihutga and Lhagvadulam have four children. Having received food assistance, Lhagvadulam volunteered to help with the remaining distribution. (The other three children were in school when this picture was taken.)

Dulmaa and her husband Mend-Bayar are expecting their 4th child. Her mother lives with them. Neither one currently has work, so the food was distributed at a very good time for them.
