Myanmar Newsflash
More than 2 months after that cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar, the situation remains alarming: The initial relief-work which includes disposal of dead bodies and the distribution of medicines, mosquito nets, water and food was initially planned to last 3 months but due to the severity of the situation, the phase has been prolonged until the beginning of 2009.
In the response, Dorcas - through partner Medical Teams International and World Concern - are also addressing a second wave of the disaster: a looming health crisis of widespread malaria and infectious diseases. This is why - among other things - 10,000 long-lasting insect nets were distributed in different villages in the last two weeks while needs assessment for further support were done in nine village tracts. The cyclone was one of the deadliest in recent history with more than 130,000 dead or missing, according to official estimations.
