Emergency Assistance for Ethiopia
In response to the serious food-insecurity situation in Ethiopia, Dorcas supports some 23,600 people from September to November 2008 in the Jeldu district situated at about 120 kilometres north from the capital Addis Abeba.Dorcas supports these 23,600 people through its local partner, the Meserete Kristos Church Relief and Development Association.
Assistance is given in the form of grains, oil and pulses in order to meet the people's basic nutritional needs. Priority is given to pregnant women, lactating mothers, food insecure female headed households, as well as to disabled and sick people. Some 4,700 of the beneficiaries belong to this group. Some 18,900 persons who are able to work, will participate in construction and field work for which they receive food for themselves and their families.
According to a rapid malnutrition assessment recently conducted by Dorcas' partner, there is (severe) malnutrition among children 6 months- 5 years of age in the area. Ethiopia, perennially one of the world's hungriest nations, now faces what some call "a toxic cocktail." Its ingredients: drought that in some places killed the entire spring crop; global inflation that has doubled the price of food; armed rebellion in the Somali region that has disrupted food delivery; and assorted plagues, from insects to hailstones.
At least 14 million Ethiopians - 18% of the nation - need food aid or cash assistance, according to government figures and aid agency estimates.
With YOUR help, Dorcas continues to assist the victims of the food insecurity in Ethiopia - while working for development for the whole nation.
