Kenya: First Low-Cost Houses Ready!
A year ago, Dorcas received a request for building low-cost houses in the regions of Kitise and Wikivuvwa in Kenya.
Now, a year later, the first houses with solar and/or biogas installations are ready. Next to each house, there is a 5000 liter (1,300 gallons) so-called "water-harvesting tank" which collects rain-water.
The houses are built for the "productive poor" which means the poor who can and will pay back the costs over the coming 10 years. With the money paid back, houses for the "poorest of the poor" are constructed - i.e., for people who are not able to pay back the costs.
The houses are built of so-called Stabilized Soil Blocks (SSB) that are strong and economical building-blocks made of a mixture of sub-soil mixed with a small quantity of cement. Almost any soil containing clay and sand can be used to make between 90 and 150 SSBs / 50 kilograms bag of cement.
Dorcas cooperates with MAKIGA, the local brick-producing business of which the houses are made of and that also trains the local community. Some 50 of these houses will in the coming years be built in the regions of Kitise and Wikavuwa, as part of the community development project in Kenya. Dorcas is - since the 1990's - active with relief and development projects in Kenya, namely in the areas of Water & Sanitation, Child Development, Agriculture en Food Security Health and Health, HIV/AIDS projects.
