Thank You! 4.7 Million Meals Distributed in 2008
In 2008, Dorcas - with your help - distributed some 4.7 million (4,723,900) meals to poor food-insecure people in the developing world.
Iraq, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, North Korea, Mongolia, Afghanistan, China and Bangladesh are some of the countries where people in crisis received food. The highest number of meals was distributed in Kenya after the out-break of violence that erupted in the country in connection with the presidential elections in 2007. In total, close to 1.5 million meals were distributed in Kenya while in Bangladesh some 1.4 million were distributed.
-"We expect to see an increasing number of requests for food-assistance in 2009", says Dirk Jan Groot, International Director of Dorcas Aid. "Nearly a BILLION of the world's 6.5 billion people suffer from malnutrition. That's more than the entire population in the EU, US and Canada! Let us not forget that the food crisis is still with us - but help those who need food!"
Even though cereal production in the world increased in 2008, the rise was mostly in developed nations. The food price crisis left some 44 million people hungry, bringing the global number of undernourished people close to one billion. Therefore, in 2009, Dorcas continues to render assistance and support to those in need.
