Food Relief for Hungry in Kenya
From April to August 2009, Dorcas Aid International will provide food (maize, beans and cooking oil) for 3,970 households in Kenya (about 23,820 persons). The food will be distributed in Machakos (4 centres), Mwingi, Makueni and Ikutha (each with 2 centres) which are areas where Dorcas supports ongoing development projects.
The food assistance is necessary due to a number of reasons, eg:
- - prolonged drought and crop failure experienced in the Southeastern region during the last three planting seasons
- - failure of the October - December 2008 short rains in the Eastern Province
- - failure by the farmers in Western Kenya and Rift Valley to plant as a result of post-election violence caused food shortage countrywide and consequently increases in food prices ( > 100%)
The relief project is scheduled to begin mid-April. Currently, the beneficiary screening and selection is being done.
March 26, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) stated that the global economic crisis "has contributed to pushing the number of hungry people in the world above 1 billion for the first time."
