Ethiopia: Dorcas Women Produce Low Energy Stoves
The Government of Addis Abeba recently invited a Dorcas supported cooperative to come and demonstrate their product in the Annual National Bazaar, organized in Addis in March every year, a major event where different businesses demostrate their products.
The cooperative - which consists of 20 women - produce 20 energy-saving stoves a day. Energy-saving is an especially "hot topic" in Ethiopia, one of the problems of the country is struggling with being deforestation: most stoves use wood for fuel.
The cooperative is part of a Dorcas supported Employment & Income project in Addis Abeba, the capital of Ethiopia.
Officially, the cooperative is called the "Limited Cooperative of Wogagen Improved Fuel Saving Injera Stove", and was founded after a 10-day long Dorcas-supported training in how to produce wood saving (thus environmentally friendly) stoves for producing injera, a local thin bread often eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can only imagine their joy to get this opportunity!
Before the cooperative was formed, the women's capacity was built through trainings on the SHG (Self Help Group) concept which includes training in credit management, work ethics and business skills. The Dorcas-project is located in the Northern tip slum area of Addis Ababa. Until now, 225 women have been helped in this project.
