2007

Achievements Until Now:
People from the Gypsy and Roma community have increase access to health care services, improved their hygiene and gained self-esteem. Awareness about drug use, HIV/AIDS and family planning has increased. Also paediatric services and additional food for malnourished children are provided. Cancer patients receive palliative care (191 patients in 2010) and health specialist, students and caregivers are trained on cancer, HIV/AIDS and palliative care as a human right.

Target Group:
Roma and Gypsy communities and terminally ill patients need of palliative care.

Problem Program Addresses:
Although the Central European countries have indeed avoided violent conflict, ethnic relations between Roma and majority populations has reportedly deteriorated to a significant extent in the last decade. Throughout the region, Roma have difficulty procuring and keeping employment. Because of low incomes and limited access to public services, many households suffer from poor sanitation and infrastructure, which hinders these groups from participating fully in public life. In addition, there is lack of basic health care for marginalized groups, including Gypsy, Roma and people with low incomes. The capacities of local health care services are limited and quality of infrastructure and services for mothers with new-born babies is poor. In addition, there is low awareness on HIV/AIDS, STDs and cancer among the youth. Albania is facing different problems related to cancer. There are a small number of palliative care centers in Albania and there is a lack of palliative care specialists to care for the terminally ill. Further, there is poor knowledge on palliative care among health personnel and the general public. In addition, few drugs are available for palliative care because they are very expensive and often not reimbursed.
Purpose:
Improve health care services among marginalized groups (gypsy, Roma and families with low income), including education on STD, HIV/AIDS and to promote responsible sexual behaviour, and improve palliative care services in Korca and other regions of Albania.

Main Activities:
Train and coach Gypsy and Roma people about Health Care, Hygiene, HIV/AIDS, STDs, cancer. Free medical examinations. Train public health specialists and medical staff and work together with other organizations (including insurance institute) to improve health care services. Train nurses and caregivers to care for terminally ill patients, provide drugs to patients, and lobby on national level for covering part of the costs of palliative care.
