Geographical Area:
Different districts in Egypt

Start Sector:
2004

Achievements Until Now:
Seven young Egyptian doctors are trained in family medicine and the trained doctors are serving patients and giving classes to nurses. Also workshops are provided to medical students on cardiac pulmonary resuscitation and hospital rounds. Care to people with disabilities is provided in 15 centers, of which 7 have been established in the poorest regions of Cairo and upper Egypt established in 2010. Out of the 7 centres, 5 of them are specialized in mental disability rehabilitation, 1 is for Deaf and dumb peoples rehabilitation and 1 is for blind children. A training and awareness plan has been implemented for the families (especially mothers), staff at the centers and the community.

Target Groups:
12 newly graduated Egyptian physicians. The mentally disabled children/adults, their parents/caregivers and the community members who did not know how to handle the disabled.

Problem Program Addresses:
The inadequate primary health care in Egypt has several causes. It is due to the lack of well-trained family physicians, poor use and maintenance of patient records, no continuing medical education and lack of patient education. The high percentage of mentally disabled cases is due to illiteracy, lack of hygienic practises, lack of nutritious food, marriages within the same extended family and poor medical follow-up to pregnant women. Unfortunately, when a family has a mentally disabled child, he/she is considered a curse and a shame and always kept locked at homes.

Purpose:
To provide quality rehabilitation services to people living with disabilities in centers and increase the availability of highly-trained, primary care physicians in Egypt.

Main Activities:
Schedule didactic lectures in conformity with the curriculum. Establish a communication system to promote access of up-to-date medical information. Train local health care provider and clerical staff. Hold a joint annual medical conference in family medicine. Family members are trained how to accept their mentally handicapped children. Furnish 3 day care centres in Ard El Ahlam, Ard El Shirka and Imbaba in Cairo. Training different community members how to help the MD integrate with the society on their own.
