Project/Sector Name:
Child Care & Development - Care for Mentally Disabled, Egypt
Partner(s):
Hope Coptic Association
St. Mark Coptic Cathedral
Geographical Area:
Cairo and Rashid Governorates
Start Sector:
2003
Achievements Until Now:
7 Centers for People With Learning Disabilities (PWLD) are established in Cairo and Upper Egypt (5 of them are specialized in mental disability rehabilitation, 1 is for deaf and dumb rehabilitation and 1 is for blind children). The old Dorcas supported centers are assessed and enhanced through assessing the programs and the trainers' performance and expanding the services and workshops. A training and awareness plan for PWLD families is implemented. Awareness among the community about PWLD is increased; their natural capacity, how to deal with them and the social responsibilitiy towards them via: marketing products, PWLD trips, media publications, etc.
Target Group:
People Living With Learning Disabilities (PWLD) in the society and their families.
Problem Program Addresses:
Lack of specialized PWLD rehabilitation centers. Lack of skills, training and awareness on how to deal with PWLD in rehabilitation centers. Also the negative attitude of family and the society towards PWLD. Lack of specialized, skilled trainers who work in the field of PWLD rehabilitation and education.
Purpose:
To rehabilitate and integrate PWLD into the Egyptian society by providing rehabilitation services in PWLD centers.
Main Activities:
Identify 5 new day care centres annually. Enhance and encourage expansions in old centres. Support training teachers of PWLD centres. Develop a training programme according to the needs of every day care center. Train families of PWLD's on the rights of their children and support them to access services. Encourage volunteers to provide support to the PWLD centers (doctors, youth, teachers, sports specialists, speech therapists, social workers, etc). Integrate PWLD's in community activities (cultural, sports, etc).
