Achievements Until Now:
The three elderly care projects under this sector support hundreds of elderly people. Many of whom lost their children due to HIV/AIDS and became ‘parents' of their grandchildren. Since they lack any means to support themselves, the project provides care, support and comfort to improve their living conditions. The service they receive from the project includes supplementary food, clothing, medical service and appropriate shelter. The elderly are given the opportunity to socialize with each other by participating in the preparation of their food, coffee ceremonies, and playing games. In addition, grannies are reached with a word of God during home visit. In general the project is helping the grannies to live the remaining part of their life happy and dignified.
Target group:
Elderly people who are old, helpless and poor are supported by the project. The projects set selection criteria. Before joining the project most of them were beggars; depending on the support other people gave them.
Problem Program Addresses:
Absence of family members who take care of the elderly, and nursery homes where they can get appropriate services at their old age is a big problem in the country. As a result the elderly suffer from a lack of basic services like food, clothing, shelter and medical services. Mostly they are left alone without anyone to support them, become beggars on the street or end up taking care of their grandchildren. They feel socially neglected and lead a desperate life.
Purpose:
Improve the living condition of elderly people. Make the elderly people lead a more dignified and socially active life.
Main Activities:
Provision of basic services like: food, clothing, appropriate shelter and facilities and sanitary materials on a regular basis. Provision of health service. Training provided to program staff and the community on awareness creation in the need of care and support for the old people. Social activities organized. Home visits conducted. Counseling service (both spiritual and social) provided.
