Project/Sector Name:
Housing, Ethiopia
Partner(s);
Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church Head Office (EKHC)
Geographical Area:
Nazareth
Start Sector:
1991
Achievements Until Now:
Since 2005 222 houses were constructed and delivered to the beneficiaries as part of the project plan. There is a variance of 22 houses as a shortfall. The variance between the plan and accomplishment is because of the delay on the side of government to provide land for construction and absence in supply of various construction materials at the national level. Other activities that were carried out: construction of a three classrooms community kindergarten with latrine and office were finalized. Land for the construction of 102 houses was secured from the government. Through participatory grading tools both the SHG members and the CLAs select the eligible individuals who deserve the house and 154 beneficiaries were selected. Moreover the project office authenticates the fairness of the selection process. With all these approval all the 154 beneficiaries have got their own private houses. 20 % of the community contribution is collected from the 154 house owners. Various community capacity building trainings were carried out to empower the community. Among the trainings urban agriculture, saving and credit management, basic business skill, family planning, HIV/AIDS awareness, home management, and other various disciplines.
Target Groups:
Elderly, widows, OVCs (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) and disabled in Nazareth area.
Problem Program Addresses:
Poor housing condition has become evident resulting from unavailable clean water and toilet facilities and substandard shelter. Communities do not have electric facilities to help the children do their study at home. Children do not have places to play and are exposed to communicable diseases. The consciousness of the community in terms of being steward to the environment is also a point of concern for the project.
Purpose:
Improve the living condition of the poor by providing better housing
Main Activities:
Securing land for the construction of low cost houses. Conducting target beneficiary selection with the cluster level association. Producing of low-cost bricks. Constructing houses with kitchen and latrine facilities (kitchen to be done with others). Conduct training on cleanliness in the house. Conduct training on communal hygiene (like latrine, waste disposal etc.). Provide training for housing beneficiaries on environmental rehabilitation and urban agriculture. Conduct trainings for beneficiaries on income-generation, entrepreneurship development and business planning. Train community health volunteers on family planning, HIV/AIDS and environmental sanitation and hygiene.
