Achievements Until Now:
70 women have increased their skills through trainings and are now making quality products (baskets, etc) using alternative raw materials such as clay and animal bones. This is in line with measures to protect Doum Palm tree which is facing extinction due to over-use. The products produced by the women are easily reaching the market due to improved quality.
Target Group:
The project targets women and youth from Kambi moto in Illiye springs and youth from Lodwar Town. These are women and youth with limited sources of income. The project currently targets 120 beneficiaries (80 youths and 40 women).
Problem Program Addresses:
Among the youth, the program seeks to address the problem of unemployment. This is done by encouraging the youth to develop their talents and skills in arts and crafts as a means of accessing income. The project also seeks to provide a constructive and productive way for youth to spend their time and thereby deterring them from engaging in vices that will expose them to HIV/AIDS. The program also seeks to improve the income levels of women from Kambi Moto in Eliye Springs. These income opportunities of these women are more limited than those of their male counterparts.
Purpose:
Improve the art skills of the women from Kambi Moto area and the youth from Lodwar.
Main activities:
Train the target women in basketry, clay work, weaving, bead work and leather work. Train youth in painting, art works and card making. Train beneficiaries in business skills, marketing and small enterprise development. Facilitate exhibitions of project products as part of marketing. Environmental awareness rising through use of alternative materials.
