Achievements Until Now:
A reduction of HIV prevalence from 19% to the current 5.1% as a result of efforts of these two projects and that of other agencies. Overall, 68,210 people have been reached with information about HIV/AIDS through public campaigns, visits to institutions (primary/secondary/colleges), home visitations and use of other multimedia tools. In addition, 357 people living with HIV/AIDS have been given care and support in form of food supplements, training in entrepreneurship skills and nutrition, assistance to start income generating activities, counseling and provision of anti retroviral drugs and treatment in collaboration with government hospitals. 203 orphans have also been given care and support (medicine, food, clothing, education, therapy and counseling). Public campaigns have enabled 6,714 people to attend VCT centers and know their HIV status. Finally, focus on both the youth in and out of school has seen the establishment of ‘chill' and health clubs (clubs promoting abstinence) formed in various schools, as well as quarterly publication of a youth chill magazine to address and articulate all youth issues.
Target Group:
149,100 people from 4 locations in Machakos Municipality and in 2 divisions in Chuka district. The target population consists of people living with HIV/AIDS, young people in and out of school, as well as orphans and vulnerable children.
Problem Program Addresses:
Lack of information/awareness among the target population about HIV/AIDS. Social stigma targeting those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Poor and/or lack of care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS and orphans and vulnerable children.
Purpose:
Influence peoples' behavior change, reduce spread of HIV/AIDS and improve the care for the infected and affected people.
Main Activities:
Capacity Building - Public awareness campaigns on HIV/AIDS aimed at influencing behavior change among community members and youth in and out of school. In addition, training of community resource persons is undertaken to increase awareness and combat stigma. Poverty Reduction - Care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS and orphaned children/vulnerable children through provision of food supplements, educational assistance, referrals, provision of medicine and anti-retroviral drugs and counseling is carried out. Training on entrepreneur skills and link to micro-credit schemes. Lobby and Advocacy - The projects works with other stakeholders ranging from other community based organizations, churches to government departments so as to increase services to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Awareness on rights of children, as well and people living with HIV/AIDS is articulated.
