Achievements Until Now:
446 water pans, 118 sub surface dams and 6 earth dams have been constructed. These have reduced the distances travelled to a source of water from 10 kilometres to 2 kilometres for 2,800 households. Over 2,354 participating farmers have witnessed improved nutrition through increased food production as a result of adoption of dry land farming methods and utilization of certified seeds of drought tolerant food crops. Another 565 farmers are engaged in horticultural production. In addition, 56 member farmers have formed a cooperative society where they sell milk.
Target Group:
2 communities (Muthetheni and Ngangani) with about 2,800 households. These are poor and have limited resources and skills to increase their agricultural production. The area also experiences water scarcity.
Problem Program Addresses:
Inadequate water resources, lack of training and skills, poor farming methods and environmental degradation have contributed to food insecurity among the population living in Machakos and Yatta Districts.
Purpose:
Improve food security, nutrition and income levels among participating farmers.
Main Activities:
Water harvesting - The aim is to achieve sustainable water availability through water harvesting via dams. Food production - Training small-scale subsistence farmers in dry land farming methods, use of drought tolerant food crops, use of certified seeds, seed bulking, marketing, value addition and agro forestry practices. Livestock production - This involves improving the local breeds of cows and goats to increase milk production. Environmental Conservation - This focuses on tree planting and control of soil erosion Capacity building - Priority is given to leadership training of committees in charge of different project activities and beneficiaries to increase participation and ownership of projects.
