Project/Sector Name:
Agriculture & Food security, Mozambique
Partner(s):
Methodist Church Mozambique
Geographical Area:
Sofala Province and Manica Province (Centre of Mozambique)
Start Sector:
2003
Achievements Until Now:
355 farmers have had their food situation improved after receiving training on food production, storage, livestock production and marketing. The farmers were also provided with hybrid seeds for staple crops, vegetables and fruits. They also received water irrigation cans and irrigation systems. After training, the farmers have established a revolving fund where they make deposits after the harvest seasons.
Target Group:
355 farmers comprising of 153 men and 182 women in 3 districts are involved in crop and livestock production, as well as horticultural farming. These are poor subsistence farmers who grow crops mainly for their own household consumption.
Problem Program Addresses:
DAI-Mozambique seeks to address the problem of food insecurity in Muanza, Mandie and Cheringoma Districts of Sofala and Manica Provinces. Poor information on farming methods and lack of knowledge of the agricultural potential of the communities in the targeted regions have resulted in low food production and poor nutrition.
Purpose:
To increase arable crop farming in communities in Sofala and Manica provinces. This will eventually lead to reduction of poverty and improve nutrition levels among the targeted groups.
Main Activities:
Provide financial, technical and material support to the target group. This includes training on food production, livestock husbandry, marketing skills, construction of improved storage facilities, demonstration fields, as well as provision of hybrid seeds to the farmers. This has enabled the farmers to improve their food production and animal husbandry practices.
