Project/Sector Name:
Child Care & Development - Rehabilitation Street Children, Russia
Partner(s):
Mission Possible
Geographical Area:
Moscow regionYekaterinburg
Start Sector:
1997
Achievements Until Now:
5 days a week - at 4 different places in Moscow - on average 50 children, teenagers and homeless people have received soup, tea and bread. Children are supported to return home. In 1998, a rehabilitation center for drug- and alcohol addicts was established near Yaroslavl. Annually, 40 persons in need stay at the farm. During the years, investments in the renovation of buildings and the purchase of mechanical equipment have been done with the result that the farm is profitable. In 2000, a shelter was purchased and renovated where 20 street children or children from drug- and alcohol addicts staying at the farm are taken care of. In 2006, a daycare-centre was purchased and renovated in 2007.From 2002 till 2005 Dorcas supported the Street Patrol and Day-Care activities of Mission Possible in St. Petersburg.Street Patrol in St.Petersburg was on the streets twice a week. Children were provided with meals at metro stations: On annual base about 1750 meals were served in the streets. Three times a week Mission Possible organized day-care activities attended by 10-25 children.
Target Group:
Social orphans/street children; there are some orphaned children on the street, but the vast majority of street children are "social orphans" (they have parents but left without parental care). 50-70 street children are supported by street patrol; 15-45 children attend day care activities and it is planned that annually 10 teenagers have rehabilitation at the shelter.
Problem Program Addresses:
The estimates for the number of street children in Russia vary a lot, but the figures from 2002-2004 suggest there are 500 000 children living permanently or occasionally on the streets. In addition, there are neglected children who still are able to live in their homes. The main cause is alcohol abuse in families and financial distress. The problem is especially alarming in the largest cities: In Moscow, there are about 50,000 neglected children. The resources of the cities are not sufficient to solve the situation.
Purpose:
Rehabilitation of street children and their families in Moscow, St Petersburg & Yekaterinburg
Main Activities:
3 days a week, a children's patrol is executed in Yekaterinburg (3 locations) during which meals are distributed on average to 50-70 street childrenIn Yekaterinburg 2-3 times a week a facility is rented where 15-45 children are served food and clothes and attend Christian and educational programDuring 2007, a shelter (150 m2) was purchased in Yekaterinburg, which will be opened around Christmas.
