Achievements Until Now:
A water system has been built in Dercen and water distributed. Close to 3000 inhabitants of the village now have gained access to clean drinking water. The water needs and provision possibilities of 11 Gypsy communities have been assessed.
Target Group:
The Gypsy population of Transcarpathia. In 2007-2008, water provision is supported to 11 Gypsy camps/villages and about 2100 Gypsies will have access to clean water. Another 8-9 wells will be considered to be drilled. Health education is always an integrated part of these projects and the whole community is involved.
Problem Program Addresses:
Lack of access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation facilities which results in bad hygiene and outbreak of waterborne diseases.
Purpose:
Reduction of water borne diseases. To increase access to clean drinking water and improve sanitation and health awareness.
Main Activities:
Health & hygiene education through Community Health Workers and through Gypsy Mission staff and volunteers. Drilling wells in Gypsy Camps. Provision of portable water for Gypsy families in first phase. Provision of water connection to the poorest families (to be considered after evaluating the first phase results).
