Project/Sector Name:
Child Care & Development - Child sponsorship, Ukraine
Partner(s):
Favor
Geographical Area:
Kriwoy Rog
Start Sector:
2003
Achievements Until Now:
Starting in 2002, the number of children who received support increased from 25 to 160. Quarterly, vulnerable children from Kriwoy Rog each receive material support. The children and their families are visited frequently. Annually, a Christmas program has been arranged for all participants of the project with donated gifts. Summer camps have also been organized annually for the children. Every year, some students from child sponsorship move to the Adopt a Student programme in which Dorcas supports the students with tuition fees and other support.
Target Group:
Underprivileged children and students, living in large families, single-parent families with two or more children, families where parents cannot support their families because of health problems.
Problem Program Addresses:
Due to the economic situation in Ukraine, an increased number of children grow up without future perspectives. Their families do not only lack the financial means to provide good education for their children but also often lack the possibility to buy school material, food variety and necessary medicines. An additional problem is alcohol abuse in many families.
Purpose:
Improved well-being and prospects of vulnerable children. Beneficiaries have become more self-confident and sustainable.
Main Activities:
Quarterly, vulnerable children from Kriwoy Rog receive material support (food, clothes) and school fees are paid. Annually children attend summer camps. Furthemore, children are invited to attend holidays organised by Favor. Training seminars for parents organized quarterly. Children visited by social workers and by students that volunteer in the project. Education fees are paid for students' studies at the universities. Students are provided with scholarship for buying stationery, textbooks and transportation. Students are trained to work as volunteers at the day care centre or at the summer camp and children sponsorship project.
